Gold Button Ranch (GBR) is located in the Orange Walk District in the north western area of Belize, abutting the Mexican border which is the Rio Honda River, approximately 20 miles south west of Orange Walk Town along the Orange Walk to Blue Creek road. The ranch is approximately 90 miles (145km) from Belmopan, the administrative center of Belize, allowing easy access to the various government departments and agencies. It is approximately 80 miles (129km) from the container port at Belize City.
GBR consists of approximately 24,000 acres. With the exception of one large out parcel in the south eastern portion of the property near the village of San Felipe, the ranch is essentially rectangular in shape with the rear property line formed by seven miles of frontage along the Rio Honda river. The Rio Honda forms the physical boundary between Belize and Mexico in this area.
Topographically, the entire property is essentially flat, falling back slightly to the river frontage along the rear boundary. Some hilly areas are found in the north western sections of the property, several areas of which, consist of caliche deposits which are removed and utilized on the ranch for fill and road beds. The 500 acres of undeveloped land are moderately rolling and covered with trees and light undergrowth of various species indigenous to the area. The land is currently divided into 19 pastures and other areas, as detailed in appendix (i).
GBR is currently operated as a beef cattle ranch. It is completely fenced and cross fenced with approximately 23,000 acres currently in mature pasture. Several small tracts, estimated to contain five to ten acres, are currently planted in various fruit and vegetable crops and the remaining 500 acres (excluding the 300-acre lake and a small area devoted to installations) are undeveloped.
GBR has a number of buildings, including a substantial residence (appendix ii). It is crossed in two directions by private and public all weather roads and there are two man made lakes on the ranch. One is a four acre impoundment and the other is 100 acres in area. These lakes, as well as the river and a number of streams, provide ample water for the cattle operation.
GBR now supports some 300 head of cattle, as well as a number of horses. The cattle currently raised on the property are of various mixed breeds, crossed with Brahmin, as is common in most subtropical climates, for their ability to withstand the heat. The capacity of the ranch is nearer 5,000 head of cattle, but because of restricted marketing opportunities the volume has never been built up.
For all intents and purposes, GBR is completely self supporting. Included in the land improvements is a saw mill that not only processes enough timber from the clearing operations to supply GBR, but also an excess which is marketed locally.
It should also be noted that GBR is an important oasis of wildlife, much of it rare. In particular, an extremely rare sub species of crocodile is found on GBR. Much work has been done in this regard by Clemson University (report and census available on request).
The Governments of Belize and Mexico now propose within the foreseeable future to build a bridge (or conceivably ferry) link to the Mexican highway system. The intended location of this link will be at the south western corner of the Ranch. Once this road improvement is made, the Ranch will enjoy all weather road connection to the Mexican road network and through it, direct to the USA. Next day trucking of produce to the USA will then be possible.
